Deltocymatoceras was named by Kummel (1956) [Sepkoski's age data: K Maes Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. Its type is Nautilus leiotropis.

It was assigned to Cymatoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964); to Nautilidae by Shimansky (1975); and to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002).
