Diodoceras was named by Hyatt (1900) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-u Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. Its type is Nautilus avonensis.

It was assigned to Trigonoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964); and to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002).
