Epistroboceras was named by Turner (1954) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-u Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. Its type is Epistroboceras stubblefieldi.

It was reranked as Stroboceras (Epistroboceras) by Gordon (1964).

It was assigned to Stroboceras by Gordon (1964); to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Trigonoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Niko and Mapes (2007).
