Tollia tolli was named by Pavlow (1914) [DISTRIBUTION: Valanginian; Siberia, Greenland.]. It is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Tollia, Tollia (Tollia).

It was recombined as Tollia (Tollia) tolli by Alsen (2006).
