Maccoyoceras was named by Miller et al. (1933) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. Its type is Nautilus (Discites) discors.

It was assigned to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Trigonoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Korn et al. (2022).
