Menuthionautilus was named by Collignon (1933) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Indu Sepkoski's reference number: 995]. Its type is Nautilus kieslingeri.

It was corrected as Menuthionautlis by Sepkoski (2002).

It was assigned to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Grypoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Shigeta and Zakharov (2009).
