Taxonomy
Protaster scabrosus was named by Whidborne (1896). Its type specimen is Lectotype GSM 7169 and is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Protaster (Drepanaster) scabrosus by Whidborne (1898); it was recombined as Drepanaster scabrosus by Spencer (1940) and Owen (1965).
