Paracymatoceras was named by Spath (1927) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bath J Tith-u Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. Its type is Nautilus asper.

It was assigned to Cymatoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964); to Cymatoceratinae by Gliozzi and Malatesta (1983); to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Nautilidae by Shimansky (1975) and Alsen (2006).
