Taxonomy
Permonautilus was named by Kruglov (1933) [Sepkoski's age data: P u]. Its type is Nautilus cornutus. It is the type genus of Permonautilidae.

It was assigned to Liroceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964); to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Permonautilidae by Barskov and Shilovsky (2014).
