Grypoceras (Plummeroceras) was named by Kummel (1953) [Sepkoski's age data: P Sakm Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. Its type is Grypoceras (Plummeroceras) plummeri.

It was reranked as Plummeroceras by Teichert et al. (1964), Sepkoski (2002) and Pérez-Valera et al. (2017).

It was assigned to Grypoceras by Kummel (1953); to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Grypoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Pérez-Valera et al. (2017).
