Potoceras was named by Hyatt (1894) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-u Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. Its type is Potoceras dubium.

It was assigned to Eudoceratidae by Hyatt (1894); to Liroceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964); and to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002).
