Ptenoceras was named by Hyatt (1894) [Sepkoski's age data: D Sieg-u D Eife Sepkoski's reference number: 2,299].

It was assigned to Rutoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964); and to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002).
