Rutoceras was named by Hyatt (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: D Gedi D Give-u Sepkoski's reference number: 299]. It is the type genus of Rutoceratidae.

It was assigned to Rutoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964); and to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002).
