Taxonomy
Ammonites cryptoceras was named by d'Orbigny (1840). It is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Lyticoceras.

It was recombined as Lyticoceras cryptoceras by Hyatt (1900), Reboulet (1996) and Klein (2005).
