Taxonomy
Heteroceras was named by d'Orbigny (1849) [Sepkoski's age data: K Barr-u K Apti-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Lindigia helicoceroides. It is the type genus of Heteroceratinae.

It was assigned to Heteroceratinae by Aguirre-Urreta and Klinger (1986); to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Heteroceratidae by Murphy (1975), Klein et al. (2007) and Frau et al. (2016).
