Corax egertoni was named by Agassiz (1843).

It was recombined as Galeocerdo egertoni by Gibbes (1847) and Gibbes (1849); it was recombined as Carcharias egertoni by Woodward (1889); it was recombined as Carcharhinus (Prionace) egertoni by Hay (1902); it was recombined as Carcharias (Prionodon) egertoni by Eastman (1904); it was recombined as Prionodon egertoni by Leriche (1942).
