Sauropodopus was named by Ellenberger (1970). It is considered to be a form taxon.
It was synonymized subjectively with Brachychirotherium by Olsen and Galton (1984) and Klein and Lucas (2021).
It was assigned to Sauropoda by Ellenberger (1972); to Prosauropoda by Romero Molina et al. (2003); to Rauisuchia by Knoll (2004); and to Chirotheriidae by D'Orazi Porchetti and Nicosia (2007).

Four very short digits in the hand, which is round and paddle-shaped. Five short digits in the pes where group I-IV is oriented forward, while the fifth digit is present behind digit groups I-IV. |
