Trochoceras was named by Barrande in von Hauer (1848) [Sepkoski's age data: D Sieg-u D Eife-l Sepkoski's reference number: 299,524].

It was assigned to Rutoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964); and to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002).
