Tylonautilus was named by Pringle and Jackson (1928) [Sepkoski's age data: C Serp-l P Sepkoski's reference number: 524].

It was assigned to Gzheloceratidae by Shimanskiy (1967); to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Tainoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Niko and Mapes (2016).
