Xenocheilus was named by Shimansky (1957) [Sepkoski's age data: J u K Barr Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. Its type is Nautilus malbosi.

It was assigned to Pseudonautilidae by Shimansky (1957), Teichert et al. (1964) and Shimansky (1975); and to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002).
