Catyrephoceras was named by Foerste (1926) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ludl-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1066].

It was assigned to Lechritrochoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964); and to Tarphyceratida by Sepkoski (2002).
