Taxonomy
Dryopithecus giganteus was named by Pilgrim (1915). Its type specimen is GSI D. 175, a tooth (right lower third molar), and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Indopithecus giganteus by von Koenigswald (1949); it was synonymized subjectively with Dryopithecus indicus by Simons and Pilbeam (1971); it was recombined as Gigantopithecus giganteus by Kay (1982).
