Dryopithecus punjabicus was named by Pilgrim (1910).
It was recombined as Ramapithecus punjabicus by Simons and Pilbeam (1971) and Pilbeam et al. (1977); it was synonymized subjectively with Sivapithecus sivalensis by Kay (1982); it was recombined as Sivapithecus punjabicus by Andrews and Cronin (1982).
