Tetrao cupido was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type species of Tympanuchus.
It was recombined as Cupidonia cupido by Reichenbach (1852); it was recombined as Tympanuchus cupido by Hay (1902), Hay (1930), Parmalee (1958), Parmalee (1992) and Clements et al. (2017).
