Picus villosus was named by Linnaeus (1766). It is extant.

It was recombined as Dendrocopos villosus by Guilday et al. (1977); it was recombined as Picoides villosus by Parmalee (1992), Clements et al. (2017) and Oswald and Steadman (2018).
