Seelyoceras was named by Ulrich and Foerste (1936) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren]. Its type is Cyrtoceras raei.

It was assigned to Tarphyceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Crick (1981); and to Tarphyceratida by Sepkoski (2002).
