Peponocyathus was named by Gravier (1915) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi R Sepkoski's reference number: 796]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Turbinoliinae by Wells (1956) and Berndt and Welle (1995); to Turbinoliidae by Cairns (1997); and to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002).
