Systrophoceras was named by Hyatt (1894) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ludl-u Sepkoski's reference number: 524].

It was assigned to Lechritrochoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Chen et al. (1981); and to Tarphyceratida by Sepkoski (2002).
