Fremontoceras was named by Foerste (1935) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-m O Ashg Sepkoski's reference number: 298,524].

It was assigned to Apsidoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Crick (1981); and to Barrandeocerida by Flower (1952) and Sepkoski (2002).
