Elphidium was named by Monfort (1808) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l R]. It is extant.
It was assigned to Ramulininae by Cushman (1927); to Elphidiidae by Gibson (1983); to Nonionidae by Dorreen (1948), Asano (1949) and Wienrich (1997); to Foraminiferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Elphidiinae by Loeblich and Tappan (1984) and Margerel (2012).
