Conocephalites baileyi was named by Hartt (1868). It is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Bailiella.
It was recombined as Conocoryphe (Bailiella) baileyi by Matthew (1885); it was recombined as Bailiella baileyi by Resser (1936) and Landing et al. (2008).
