Atomodesma exarata was named by Beyrich (1865). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Bakanassij, south of Kupang (Atomodesma layer), which is in a Wuchiapingian carbonate limestone in Indonesia.
It was corrected as Atomodesma exaratum by Astafieva (1993), Waterhouse and Chen (2006) and Biakov (2018).
