Kokenia was named by Holzapfel (1895) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Kokenia obliquecostata.

It was assigned to Nautiloidea by Holzapfel (1895); to Bactritidae by Teichert et al. (1964); to Anarcestida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Anetoceratinae by Korn and Klug (2002) and Korn (2006).
