Taxonomy
Latanarcestes was named by Schindewolf (1933) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi-l D Eife-u Sepkoski's reference number: 457,1103]. It is the type genus of Latanarcestidae.

It was reranked as Anarcestes (Latanarcestes) by Arkell et al. (1957).

It was assigned to Anarcestes by Arkell et al. (1957); to Anarcestida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Latanarcestidae by Korn and Klug (2002) and Korn (2006).
