Taxonomy
Maenioceras was named by Schindewolf (1933) [Sepkoski's age data: D Give-l D Give-u]. Its type is Goniatites terebratus. It is the type genus of Maenioceratidae.

It was assigned to Pinacitinae by Arkell et al. (1957); to Anarcestida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Maenioceratidae by Korn and Klug (2002), Korn (2006) and Bockwinkel and Korn (2024).
