Molannidae was named by Wallengren (1891). It is extant.

It was assigned to Trichoptera by Cockerell (1925) and Carpenter (1992); to Integripalpia by Wichard et al. (2009); to Brevitentoria by Wichard (2013); and to Leptoceroidea by Thomas et al. (2020) and Thomas et al. (2023).
