Mesobeloceras was named by Glenister (1958) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fras-m D Fras-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1042,1103]. Its type is Mesobeloceras thomasi.

It was assigned to Beloceratinae by Yatskov (1990); to Anarcestida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Beloceratidae by Korn and Klug (2002) and Korn (2006).
