Hagiastrum was named by Haeckel (1881) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Nori K Camp-l Sepkoski's reference number: 754]. It is the type genus of Hagiastridae.
It was assigned to Hagiastridae by Kiessling (1995) and De Wever et al. (2001); and to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
