Taxonomy
Palaeogoniatites was named by Hyatt (1900) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi-l D Emsi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 302,457]. It is not extant. Its type is Goniatites lituus. It is the type genus of Palaeogoniatitinae.

It was assigned to Mimosphinctinae by Arkell et al. (1957); to Anarcestida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Palaeogoniatitinae by Korn and Klug (2002) and Korn (2006).
