Prochorites was named by Clausen (1969) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fras-m Sepkoski's reference number: 1042]. It is not extant. Its type is Probeloceras alveolatum.

It was reranked as Manticoceras (Prochorites) by Clausen (1969).

It was assigned to Manticoceras by Clausen (1969); to Anarcestida by Sepkoski (2002); to Acanthoclymeniidae by Korn and Klug (2002) and Korn (2006); and to Acanthoclymeniinae by Bockwinkel et al. (2013).
