Sauropsida was named by Huxley (1864) [The term "Sauropsida" occurs in a footnote. Otherwise the same group (reptiles + birds) is always referred to as "sauroids". ]. It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Laurin and Reisz (1995).

It was assigned to Amniota by Huxley (1864) and Laurin and Reisz (1995).
