Timanites was named by Mojsisovics (1882) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fras-l Sepkoski's reference number: 302,457,1042]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Gephuroceratidae by Yatskov (1990); to Anarcestida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Koenenitidae by Korn and Klug (2002) and Korn (2006).
