Taxonomy
Pipa was named by Laurenti (1768). It is extant. It is the type genus of Pipimorpha, Pipinomorpha.

It was assigned to Pipidae by Frank and Ramus (1996); and to Pipinae by Sanchiz (1998), Trueb et al. (2005), Báez and Harrison (2005) and Delfino and Sanchez-Villagra (2018).
