Wellsites was named by House and Kirchgasser (1993) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fras-m Sepkoski's reference number: 1042]. It is not extant. Its type is Wellsites tynani.

It was assigned to Anarcestida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Triainoceratidae by Korn and Klug (2002) and Korn (2006).
