Clymenia was named by Münster (1834) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-m]. It is not extant. Its type is Planulites laevigatus.

It was reranked as Goniatites (Clymenia) by Hall (1874).

It was assigned to Goniatites by Hall (1874); to Clymeniida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Clymeniidae by Korn (2006).
