Cyrtoclymenia was named by Hyatt (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-m D Fame-u]. It is the type genus of Cyrtoclymeniaceae, Cyrtoclymeniidae.

It was reranked as Clymenia (Cyrtoclymenia) by Clarke (1892).

It was assigned to Clymenia by Clarke (1892); to Clymeniida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cyrtoclymeniidae by Korn (2006) and Becker (2010).
