Sellaclymenia was named by Hyatt (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-m D Fame-u]. It is the type genus of Sellaclymeniidae, Sellaclymeniaceae.

It was assigned to Clymeniida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Sellaclymeniidae by Bogoslovsky (1981) and Korn (2006).
