Agathiceras was named by Gemmellaro (1887) [Sepkoski's age data: C Mosc-l P Guad-l Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. Its type is Agathiceras suessi. It is the type genus of Agathiceratoidea.
It was assigned to Goniatitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Agathiceratidae by Teichert (1944), Leonova (1989), Leonova (2002), Tazawa et al. (2005), Korn (2006), Furnish et al. (2009) and Zhou (2017).
