Phricodothyris septata was named by Chronic (1949). Its type specimen is AMNH 26921/1:5, a shell (Articulated shell), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is AMNH309, Pan de Azucar, Amotape Mountains, which is in a Bashkirian/Moscovian marine horizon in Peru.
