Polypora spissa was named by Chronic (1949). Its type specimen is AMNH 26977/1:1 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is AMNH298, Bed 41, Pasaje-Picchu Section 8, which is in an Asselian/Sakmarian marine limestone in Peru.
